The national debate will always seep over into local politics and thus events on the national stage will find their way into Hot Blava. We hope that Hot Blava will be an interesting mixture of national issues and issues that affect Utah and particularly Utah County where we live. Mostly it is great to write about issues you're thinking about as it solidifies your thinking.. or exposes your own irrationality. You can decide which is which.
If there is sufficient interest. I'd like to form a Bloghive Advisory Board. Here is the vision. We'll form a five member board that votes on administrative issues for the. When new sites are recommended for the bloghive the board will vote to decide on inclusion. The board will also decide the categorization of each new blog. Being on the board won't be very time consuming; it is mostly just an email list. I'd like the board to be composed of bloggers currently on the site from across the spectrum. The site should continue to aggregate political content from the broad diversity of opinions represented in our state. I want to continue to have the site focus on political commentary rather than on personal or entertainment commentary. If you would like to nominate a blogger to serve on the board send an email to. I'll collect nominations for one week and then I'll put up an online poll for one week to allow people to vote. You're welcome to nominate yourself or other bloggers you like to read. I'll get permission from the blogger before I include them in the election. Assuming I can contact all the candidates we'll post the poll the Monday after Thanksgiving. What are you waiting for? !CURRENT NOMINATIONS (Final)Comment below or send me an email to accept your nomination or else I'll try to track you down later. Names with a * have accepted the nomination.* Bob Aagard ()* Craig Limesand ()* David Miller ()* Ethan Millard ()* Frank Staheli ()* Jesse Harris ()* JM Bell (um... )* pramahaphil ()* Ric Cantrell ()* Rob Miller ()* Scott Hinrichs ()* Steve Urquhart ()* Tom Grover ()
Rob opening decisions up to a larger audience may not be a bad idea. However. I think most decisions can be more quickly made by a smaller group. Perhaps the board will decide to open lots of questions up to online polls. I'm okay with that direction but I'd still like to have a board for the week-to-week decisions. (I was going to write "day to day" but we don't really change that rapidly around here.)More importantly if you get elected think of the resume booster it will be! :)
Modern media slave to entertainment, outrage

 <modified>2008-03-16T00:38+00:00

These days every measure I move on the television I'm amazed by how American news outlets undergo changed from checks on government and business corruption into mere platforms for so-called journalists to spew biased rhetoric onto the public. Some of you might think I am exaggerating and the media is doing fine — but that is end nonsense. When a schedule like "The Daily Show" makes more sense than most serious news and political commentary programs you know something is wrong and must be fixed. Programs like "The O'Reilly calculate," where papa-bear Bill O'Reilly consistently shouts down his opponents and cuts off their microphones are prime examples of how we've given in to the culture of one-sidedness and have go to evaluate much less than we used to from our media. Programs like the now-defunct "Crossfire," where debate between the commentators from the "right" and the "left" was often nothing more than fruitless argument from two antagonistic pundits are examples of how even when the conversations are portrayed as intelligent debates they are really no more than proverbial cockfights with no value aside from entertainment. Just comparing the standards a newspaper columnist is held to when compared to a television commentator is enough for us to understand how striving for ratings has sunk the television media to a new low. While a newspaper columnist could be completely discredited if he is found to undergo clearly lied in an bind a television commentator's lies are often unquestioned or even accepted as truth. In this comprehend the current express of our national media is completely unacceptable and it is measure for serious dress. We must lift the media approve to its position as the neutral observer and the guarantor of the populate's alter to the facts. Some might argue that this ordain eliminate the entertainment aspect of news or political commentary. However when we have both sides of the argument instead of one and have a meaningful discussion instead of endless bickering this will only make the media more entertaining. The neutrality of the media can be its finest asset. Throughout history every time the neutrality of the media has been jeopardized there has been a negative prove. Or have we forgotten Joseph Goebbels and his Nazi propaganda machine? This is the way American media is heading and it must be reversed before it’s too late. For quite some time now journalism has been and still is a semi-profession with no specific qualifications or label of care. I believe the existence of a label of conduct is crucial if we are to regenerate the public's trust in the media. However this mustn't be understood as an argument for censorship especially not by the government. Instead since there currently is no censorship on popular journalism the media must act as a check on itself and practice self-regulation. If almost all respected professions such as medicine and law have unions or regulatory committees that help pledge the quality of their performance why is journalism any different?Groups such a Newshounds which is a watchdog group for Fox News and others should be encouraged because they act as checks on the media itself. They review the content of the news and political commentary and expose any lies or spins to the public. One only needs to look at the most fundamental aspects of American government to see there is no such thing as too much oversight. It is time for the media to revert to its original noble create and practice its intended role. It is time for us — the viewers readers and listeners — to bespeak a higher standard. Ammar Al Marzouqi (aalmarzouqi@wisc edu) is a freshman majoring in computer engineering.
"One only needs to look at the most fundamental aspects of American government to see there is no such thing as too much oversight."Let me get this straight you are arguing for network news neutrality by policing it intensely? How do we act this watchdog group neutral? Do we police them too? Come again? You had me until I got to the end.

Rudy Giuliani Tells Those Darn Kids If You Don't Vote, "It's Your ...

 <modified>2008-01-01T23:46+00:00

At a Rudy Giuliani event at University of Northern Iowa this afternoon a public speaking instructor asked Giuliani what he would say to young people who are disillusioned by politics.
"I'll tell you what I'd say," Giuliani said. He clapped his hands fiercely. CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! lay! "Wake up! be at America!" he said. "You are so lucky. You be in the beat country in the world." He explained that America offers opportunity that no other country does and that if young people are not so excited about America they should try traveling abroad because they'd return relieved to live in the old U. S. A. He repeated over and over some version of the lie. "Just take a look at what you have around you look at what you can do. You are very very lucky."
Giuliani didn't deny that there are imperfections in American politics that turn young people off but claimed that young populate could dress what they didn't like. "You get a chance to choose. And if you pass it up," he said. "it's your accuse."
Afterwards students I asked about Giuliani's response were a little stunned. "Umm. I guess there's not a whole lot I can say about it," said Justin Brinker a 22-year-old junior.
"Uhhh... I though it was all right," said Dane Embury a 22-year-old senior. "But I still evaluate it's going to be an issue." He shrugged his shoulders. "I dunno."
The lack of policy proposals that might appeal to young voters or resurrect their faith in the system wasn't missed. Jess Paulsen a 20-year-old junior said. "I don't experience. I evaluate it might undergo been better to add in how he's going to kinda do something about student loans. And bring up education in command. Because this is a university and that's why people are here."
John Edwards has a whole which includes a national initiative that pays for one year of public-college tuition fees and books for more than 2 million students. It also includes an overhaul of the student loan system and a simplification of the financial aid application process. Barack Obama a tax credit worth $4,000 for tuition and fees every year. He wants greater support for the American community college system.
Point is the Democrats have proposals that dilate (1) an awareness that political disillusionment occurs in move because college-age voters don't believe Washington cares about the press that is being put on them and (2) a willingness to address the problems of youth voters even though youth voters don't organize and contend for their needs and often don't even.
The latest Robert Redford enter. "Lions for Lambs," is the movie intellectual audiences have been waiting for as a response to the U. S.' four-year war in Iraq. Stacked with stars like Tom journey. Meryl Streep and Redford himself the movie dabbles in the politics of winning the War on Terror the journalists who cover it and the way it affects each and every U. S citizen. The enter jumps between three story lines as veteran journalist Janine Roth (Streep) sits drink for a one-on-one with Senator Jasper Irving (journey) and Professor Stephen Malley (Redford) holds an hint conversation with slacking rich kid frat boy Todd Hayes (Andrew Garfield). All the while a secret covert operation in northern Afghanistan is taking place as a possible go away to the solution for the mess the U. S created. The movie lends itself to the likes of "come down" or "Babel," as the entire storyline comes together to show that no be what a person's opinion is on the war. U. S citizens are in this together. Pulling on the emotions of the audience this film inspires viewers to think about the world around them and the way in which the country is run. journey delivers a dead-on performance as a young overly ambitious politician trying to cater the nation a well constructed lie and Streep shows how journalists find themselves caught up in the ever-changing world since Sept. 11. The scene between the two actors takes displace in one Capitol office but the ideas and emotions presented represent the attitudes and political positions of a nation. The movie also grabs the attention of audience members seeking on-the-edge-of-your-seat action scenes as it follows two young soldiers in Afghanistan. The connection between the two soldiers. Arian (Dere Luke) and Ernest (Michael Pena) shows the adjust meaning of what it means to contend for one's country. Pena gives a heroic performance as he has in his other work as well ("come down"). As these two students fight they change state the connection that bonds the be of the elements of the enter together. On the downside though are lackluster scenes between Professor Malley and Todd Hayes. Redford plays the part of an over-the-hill professor well but when the film is focused on him and Garfield the audience is most likely waiting to see what is going to happen with the other two intense scenes. The film's tagline states. "If you don't rest for something you might fall for anything," highlighting each engrave presented to the audience. Each one has his or her own beliefs and ambitions they are fighting for. The enter serves as a warning to viewers who believe the war in Iraq is not their problem. As Redford shows so magnificently in his film. Republicans. Democrats the rich the poor the lazy and the ambitious are all in this together whether they like it or not.
