For some reason. Goffman thinks wikis social networks online conferences games and fun shindigs melded with some off-brand party desire Unity or the Libertarians will make a difference. Of course this is no different than any other fringe political movement — it's just geekier and fringier.
"" already tried to administer social networks into the political process with big Valley names like Brad Fitzpatrick. Jay Adelson and Jimmy Wales — with predictably pathetic results. At least that effort focused on one campaign issue budget reform and Fitzpatrick's bar tab alone probably exceeded the mere.
Does Goffman seriously believe a political movement based on a software development methodology that can't garner 5 percent of the operating system merchandise can be a more viable force than the other "sad and hopeless alterna-candidates"? Or is he merely trying to generate some attention for his new social network which promotes his other Web content at the and other locations? Gratuitous self-promotion disguised as activism is a cynical enterprise we could embrace if Goffman's execution of it weren't as sad and hopeless as his political ambitions. (
say: c) Theodore G. Bilbo — a traditional Southern Democrat best known to history for his white supremacist views — won re-election to a third term in 1946 but was never sworn in because of ill health. He died on Aug. 21. 1947. Democrat John C. Stennis won a special election that November and went on to serve until he retired in January 1989; he was at present the measure Democrat to serve Mississippi in the U. S. Senate.
Republican — whose surprise resignation announcement reported on Monday by CQ Politics will replace Bilbo’s as the state’s latest Senate vacancy — was first elected to the Senate in the 1988 race to succeed Stennis.
Lott’s Republican Senate colleague won in 1978 to succeed veteran Democratic Sen. James O. Eastland who resigned on Dec. 27 of that year so Cochran could be sworn in early and get a leg up on seniority.
Eastland himself had been appointed by the state’s governor in June 1941 to fill the Senate vacancy created by the death of Democratic Sen. Pat Harrison who had served since 1919. Eastland was not a candidate in the special election held that September to fill the brief sell of Harrison’s unexpired call which was won by Democrat protect Doxey. But Eastland did run in the 1942 regularly scheduled election and defeated Doxey in the Democratic primary that sealed his election to a lay he then held until his retirement in 1978.
