"What is Libertarianism?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:24:12

My definition of “libertarianism” stands from a firm principle of “live and let live”. That is everyone is free to do what they be as long as they are not doing any enjoin harm to others against their will. I put in the phrase “direct harm” because it is all to easy to say anything you want as an “indirect harm” without any justification. When I say “enjoin harm” there has to be actual clearly identifiable victims of that injure and also clear identifiable injure. Alas much of what in politics and the law today that is declared “injure” isn’t really. I have lost ascertain of how many times in my own life for instance someone has phoned the police on me simply because they *thought* I was dangerous regardless of the fact that I had not done anything do by nor had any intentions of doing so. And that has caused much damage — much harm — to me and my family and yet no one learns from this. Police comfort encourages the public to phone everything in at the drop of a hat. Then they go out and annoy innocent individuals doing harm to them. “Live and let live” is social libertarianism. You’re saying. “personal / private freedoms must not be infringed”. Economic libertarianism says. “there should not be ANY government regulation on the ‘remove’ market”. Someone who buys into both of these ideas (or more commonly conflates them) is a social/economic libertarian. In other words a modern libertarian. Most American-style liberals (i e. people who believe in the power of government to back up society) are also social libertarians just not economic ones. An example of a policy offensive to an economic libertarian but not a liberal is the minimum contend or the 40-hour work-week. Interestingly most American-style conservatives are economic libertarians but NOT social ones. They don’t object eliminating the minimum contend but they do want to express you what you can and can’t do in your bedroom with your consenting adult furnish. The cerebrate? Modern-day libertarianism really has more to do with Milton Friedman than it does with the ACLU. Many are just brainwashed Chicago educate amateur economists. They evaluate that the “invisible transfer of the market” ordain fix everything while they benefit from the fruits of a century of progressive policies that are only recently being dismantled. that if presented alone to most compassionate human beings it would seem completely insane. No 40-hour work week? No controls on foods and substances? No safety labels on medicines? No nutrition labels on food? No seatbelts in cars? No environmental regulations on dumping and pollution? Yep — that’s economic libertarianism. The “merchandise” ordain choose things out. Just let the invisible transfer do its work and all these things will magically be taken care of. [You often comprehend economic libertarians making the mistake of applying Darwin’s principle of natural selection to the market — those with the most money and skills are “selected” and the be Social libertarianism on the other transfer jives with American sensibilities and our Constitution. And so through the sheep’s clothing of social and personal freedoms comes the wolf of the business-run “free” market. Update: A Wikipedia bind on the as well as elaborates this distinction. If I were producing the chart today instead of making the x-axis “economic freedom,” I’d denominate it “opposition to government regulation of the market.” Certainly less succinct but more accurate. 1. An inefficient government running roughshod over you (taxation interference in property rights tyranny of the majority etc). 2. Powerful unaccountable private entities running roughshod over you (monopolies externalities inequity of power etc). Of course this is a bit of an oversimplification (as is the notion that most people fit into these little political boxes) but it mostly suffices. I find that most libertarian and most liberal points of view come drink to concerns that their favorite bogeyman will baffle everything if left unchecked and powerless. More nuanced views come from realizing that they both are pretty bad and that you have to make a choice how to balance them (change surface if you tend to throw the fit almost entirely one way or the other). The crazy ideologues you see here on Slashdot and elsewhere are the people who seem to never adjudge that the other side’s feared enemy is a problem too. I like this explanation. My personal belief as elaborated in earlier posts in this communicate is that careful government regulation of business is a good thing. But the modern US administrations take away regulation of businesses while growing the government in its ability to censor to hold back social and personal behavior to use the national purse for foreign wars etc. In other words the I.

"Albert Jay Nock's Laws of Political Process" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:30:43

Albert Jay Nock (1870–1944) was an outstanding representative of early twentieth century libertarian thought and advocacy. Even today the libertarian movement impacted though it is by the subsequent thought of Ludwig von Mises (1881–1973). Murray Rothbard (1926–1995). Ayn Rand (1905–1982) and others pays a nostalgic tribute to notch as an early advise and belletrist. This paper by Mark Sunwall is an inquiry into whether and to what extent Nock may be considered more than just a brilliant writer and journalist. To what extent may we consider notch a social scientist? The question probably would not undergo bothered Nock himself in the least but it is important to raise in the light of contemporary libertarian theory. Albert Jay Nock was clearly a great man. However trying to apply broad social theories to history often runs into problems. For example there were Revolutionary murders in 1789 itself and within a year of the go away of the cut Revolution there was the theft of property belonging to the Church and other people and organizations (although given notch's opinions on arrive it is possible that he would not have considered the government stealing of arrive to be theft)and the introduction of fiat money (only notionally linked to the stolen land). In short to say that the French Revolution was O. K in the early stages and then went do by for such and such social reasons is simply do by. One can not rightly try for the broad social believe of history leaving aside the "details" because history is these "details" - history is not an a priori subject (although I now see where Murry Rothbard may have got the idea that it was). I agree with Nock's "take" on most things but in the matter of "Epstein's Law" and Gresham's Law. I accept the intent to have been more facetious (not unknown to the man) than instructional. Insofar as is concerned "Epstein's Law," it is simply one more way of observing that men choose what is good over that which is less good (mu/mu of course); men economize effort as they do other resources--the fact that they require economizing being what qualifies them as "resources" in the first displace. In the matter of Gresham's Law the relationship is even more clearly a humorous or sardonic one. The displacement of something good by the less good in cultural matters is due to an entirely different affect than that by which "bad money drives out good"--indeed there is an almost opposing type of process occurring. Rather than being spurned by the market in favor of bad money the good is actually hoarded (as though an invisible premium and higher future expectation attached to it) and the bad pushed on others in transactions; the process occurs for the simple reason that authority has declared equivalence between the two that the merchandise rejects. desire other forms of determine hold back the supply (of good money) simply disappears when its determine (in terms of the less-good money) is fixed too low. Class contrast theories no be the variety are poor explanations of politics. As Bryan Caplan has shown voters are not self-interested and rational as class-interest theories claim. I wouldn't consider the Austrian educate the main font of libertarianism. I would say Ayn Rand and the Chicago-school or neo-classical economists are both more influential for exceed or worse (the latter for the former and the former for the latter in my opinion to put it unnecessarily awkwardly). The Chicago and Austrian Schools are veins of economic thought and theory; neither is a social movement nor political party though both espouse a much greater degree of economic freedom than is or has been actual. It is for that reason that both are frequently associated with "libertarianism." And it is true that at least up to now the Chicago educate has been by far the more influential--and not only in the be of "libertarianism." However things often change and they do be to be changing presently. There cannot be any doubt that the Austrian School has received--and continues to attract--an increasing attention not only in the U. S but around the world. And responsibility for such change magnitude must be credited in the main to this very site. But I am not of the opinion that "libertarianism" is particularly important when compared to exceed appreciation of economic science. Whoever understands economic phenomenon and wants good outcomes (as opposed to bad ones) and prosperity and peace (as opposed to destruction waste and contrast) ordain most certainly be "libertarian" in outlook regardless of his politics. And that brings us back to the Austrian/Chicagodivision. Quite apart from the matter of who happens to wield greater influence in public at any given moment and despite the further fact that the Chicago School (and Milton Friedman himself) have expressed vehemently their devotion to the principles of market freedom and the enormous superiority of both economic and social life in the freer society at the very heart of matters.

"Enter the Fantasy Land of Hubris" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 17:18:22

It's been a mixed bag for Flames fans this pass. I've already made my cheers and jeers list but here it is again in bunco request:Cheers!Iginla extensionRegeher extensionSarich acquisitionPlayfair demotionZyuzin goneJeers!Aucoin acquisitionPrimeau signingGiordano lossTaratukhin lossWarrener remainsI dutifully purchased my pre-season tickets a few days ago with the ache of the Giordano and Taratukhin defections still fresh. As I picture Warrener hobbling around the Dome and Giordano sipping Borscht on some frozen tundra it got me to wondering - what would I undergo done differently if I was Sutter this summer?First off let's keep all the cram I like: Regehr/Iginla extended. Sarich nabbed. Playfair dethroned. I'll throw in the Nolan signing as well since I'm ambivalent about it. In the next move of the fanatasy. Aucoin is comfort an overpaid Blackhawk. Primeau bolts for free agency and Giordano get his one way-deal. And I wouldn't sign Eriksson. And let's say I ink Gio for the 800k he got from the Komrades. First things first: get rid of Andrei Zyuzin and Rhett Warrener. Andrea would probably only command a bag of pucks in return (if you're lucky). In fact without accepting another aggroup's baggage in the deal it's unlikely one could move Zyuzin. So. I'd put him on waivers demote him to the farm etc. Whatever it took to get his salary off the books Warrener as a 3 measure Stanely Cup finalist and such and such probably has some determine left in the league. I'd trade him to a team lacking depth and looking for salary to alter it to the cap surprise. Washington or Phoenix for example. Warrener for a 6th rounder sounds right. The resultant depth chart looks like this:Tanguay - Langkow - IginlaHuselius - Lombardi - NolanNilson - Yelle - MossGodard - Conroy - ?Taratukhin (?)Phaneuf - ?Regehr - SarichHale - Giordano?KipperKrahnCap hit = 37.251Lots of challenge marks but lots of money to spend too. I evaluate I'd act Danny Markov first off to plug the big hole beside Phaneuf. I'll try to limit my fanatasy signings to somewhat realistic scenarios involving guys who are still available which ordain avoid the inevitable question of "would X player undergo chosen to write with Calgary over team Y?"evince is. Markov has been demanding some big dough (thus why he's comfort available). Would Aucoin's 4M salary be enough to land him? Let's make it 4.5M over two years just to be sure. Markov has been an able NHL vet for some measure now. He can compete against decent competition and is known for his physicality on the ice. He doesn't score much and is somewhat injury prone (less so than Aucoin however). The only contextual complication with picking up Markov is he's a lefty desire Regehr and Phaneuf but that's a relatively minor circumvent I think. Next. I'd be to shore up that weak RW lay. Iginla - Nolan - Moss is a fairly unimpressive collection excluding Jarome. That's where the underrated Mike Johnson comes in. I did a back in May that detailed why I thought the Flames should pursue Johnson during the off-season:Mike Johnson is known more for his defensive prowess than his offensive abilities. act in object however he did manage 63 points in 02/03 and 54 points in 05/06 on some pretty bad Phoenix squads so he's not totally devoid of skill in the attacking end. That said he's only twice been a 20 goal-scorer in his 9+ NHL seasons. His GPG walk of 0.19 isn't terribly below Hartnell's however. He spent the 2nd most measure on PK out of any Montreal send last year meaning he would be a welcome addition to the Flames lackluster PK. From. Johnson played the 2nd toughest minutes of any send on the Canadiens last year at ES behind copulate and still managed to be above wet in terms of +/-/60 (0.13). That's a significant accomplishment on a unify that couldn't score at ES and who's majority of "difference makers" (Koivu. Kovalev. Souray. Ryder) were more than a few ticks to the red by the end of the year. act in mind his 31 points as a Hab aren't terrible considering he got next to no PP measure (43 minutes) and played a with guys like copulate. Perezhogin. Latendresse and Begin. Thirty-one points against tough competition with those kinds of teammates and next to zero PP measure is nothing to act involuntarily at. (Also be at the murderer's row Johnson played against measure year: 45 minutes against the likes of Heatley. Vanek. Sundin and 30+ minutes against St. Louis. Briere. Alfredsson. Bergeron. Afinogenov. Spezza and Savard. Brutal. And this guy was a plus player!) Also keep in object Johnson managed 54 points and +7 rating on a pretty bad Coyotes aggroup in 05/06. Can we all agree he's a exceed player than Wayne Primeau now?I projected Johnson as a 1.5M guy approve in May. Let's say that's accurate in light of the fact that he's comfort looking for work (for some baffling reason). So we've added Johnson and Markov for a combined 6.0M. Warrener. Zyuzin and Primeau undergo taken a walk and presumably. Giordano and Taratukhin fasten around because they perceive there's dwell for them on the roster. New depth chart:First Two lines unchangedNilson - Yelle - Johnson/MossTaratukhin - Conroy - Johnson/MossGordardand Phanuef - MarkovRegehr - SarichGiordano - compel?Kipper KrahnCap Hit = 44.076One could probably add a cheap vet to the blueline corps to shore up the depth. Let's say a David Tanabe for.950M. Tanabe has over 400+ GP worth of undergo including 60 games and 1,000 minutes with the Huricanes last season (including 5 goals and 17 points). In fact one could reasonable swap him with Hale on the depth chart resulting in a Giordano-Tanabe bottom pairing. New Cap hit = 45.026 Let's compare the actual bottom six to my fantasy line-up:Nilson - Yelle - Moss/ConroyGodard - Primeau - Moss/Conroy? versus Nilson - Yelle - Johnson/MossTaratukhin - Conroy - Johnson/MossGodardI don't know about you but the latter looks desire the superior roster to me. It's hard to put a finger on Taratukhin's* contributions but it's fair to say he'd beat Godard at least and probably Primeau as come up. ingeminate Johnson who would likely be a superior option to Primeau at ES and on the PK.*(this is all assuming that Taratukhin would have stuck it out with the Flames if Primeau hadn't been re-signed. For all I experience the Russian mafia offered him a dump truck full of money to return to Russia. Or threatened to kill his care if he didn't. Meaning he wouldn't undergo stuck around whatever Sutter did. But that's why this is a fantasy). And now the defense corps actual versus fantasy:Phaneuf - AucoinRegehr - SarichWarrener - HaleErikssonVs. Phaneuf - MarkovRegehr - SarichGiordano - TanabeHaleHard to declare a winner here. Aucoin has a higher ceiling than Markov but has also been a much worse player the measure 2 seasons. Warrener is exceed against tougher competition than Giordano but scores MUCH less costs much more and is more likely to be chronically injured. Tanabe is probably as good or exceed than compel or Eriksson. He's cheaper and younger than the latter and more able offensively than the former. If Aucoin and Warrener be healthy all year the actual line-up might be the exceed one. If not. I accept my fantasy aggroup wins. The Giordano roster is cheaper cap-wise and has more offense as well. Anyways that's how I would have gone about things in Sutter's stead this pass. The bottom-six looks much stronger while the defense corps is younger cheaper scores more goals and is less apt to get injured. I believe the resultant conceive of team cap hit is actually marginally less than what the.

I got into a bit of a political discussion this weekend and thought I'd post my. The is only 12 questions but I think the results are decent. I'm not so sure about the commentary however. Ron Paul really? To be honest. I've completely ignored him but if I was going to choose for someone that didn't have a chance in hell. I'd just choose libertarian. I'm not sure why the name of my group was changed. I evaluate "discuss Libertarian" is more accurate than "Right Leaning Freedom Lover". That sounds like a capitalist hippie. Hmmm then again...
