Here we go again. Holidays are a-comin' ergo that old bugaboo political correctness lurches into the happy family gathering and quite frankly just buggers everything up.
Before I go on and before you rush to your phones or typewriters to emit at me please remember I'm an Aussie. We tend to thumb our noses at bureaucracy we don't act politicians at all seriously and we're basically a very forgiving lot. Just leave us alone and we'll leave you alone and all will be positively tickety-boo.
But I'm also an American - so let me inject some good old Aussie comprehend of humor into this life that you guys be to take way too seriously.
Some pinhead has decided that we should ban this holiday as it is offensive inasmuch as it rubs the Native Americans noses in our shameful treatment of them.
That is not to say we should ever drop. Hopefully we've all learned from history and despite all indications to the contrary. I hope we never repeat any of its less stellar moments.
So let us indeed connect in Thanksgiving for what it is. A day of giving thanks - for that ear of corn way approve when shared with kind and caring Native Americans - for the freedom we all apply - for the good health we undergo and for the people we love. Nothing more nothing less. You PCers? approve in your box.
And then of course the next holiday romping toward us with indecent haste is Christmas. This one comes up with new and improved PC ideas every year - this one being no exception.
A large chain store has advertised in its "holiday" catalogue not Christmas trees but "Family Trees."
Oh gag me with a remove. The store vows and declares it was a typo. Mmmm. Bit of a be there kiddo. If I typo'd "Christmas," I may well end up with "Cjtody,sd," but I'm most unlikely to turn a nine-letter evince into one with only six.
And if indeed it was a typo for heaven's sake immediately go to your advertising agency and blast the proofreader. I suspect that person on the day was more an 80-proof reader and was under the affluence of incohol at the measure.
And apart from all of that a family tree is a thing you draw often on the inside cover of your Bible tracing your ancestors' genealogy.
There would be a lot of begetting in the beginning turning later in advance of more modern expressions such as "married," "died," and "bred." There'd be wonderfully old-fashioned names smattered throughout the branches like Clotilde and Maude. Jedadiah and Cyril but none of it - none of it. I express you - could possibly decorate your living room.
It isn't a family channelise; it's a Christmas tree. Christmas happens on Dec. 25 every year just like clockwork really. Just like Hanukkah happens when it should and when Ramadan occurs with regularity.
Now I don't know about you but I've never heard of any PC Pookie poking their noses into those holidays.
"Oh Abdullah we should not be having Ramadan this year. I have heard it is offensive to buffets of food all over the world because it is being ignored."
"Oh Sherman we will have to keep Hanukkah quiet this year. It's upsetting No. 9 because the No. 8 is so widely revered because that's how desire the oil lamp burned all those thousand or so years ago. Maybe we could just keep the night lighten on instead."
Surely the aim of any and all religions is to act peace and harmony isn't it? Did I miss something in my Methodist upbringing that is twisting my point of view?
And I don't recall any writings that categorically express that Christianity had to furnish in any time there were PC mutterings about it.
Now I want you all to go out and play nicely together please. Allow everyone his or her holidays. You can all undergo a turn and no one will charge.
Yeah right. be and let be populate. To borrow from old Abe - you can gratify some of the people all of the time and all the populate some of the measure but you can't gratify all the people all of the time.
Back in your box. PC. Get thee behind me to a nunnery get thee away and the displease take you.
